SBI Joint Account KYC Update Online: How to Update KYC Through YONO & Net Banking
How to Update KYC in SBI for Joint Account Online?
Introduction:
If an account is joint account and the request is made to
update the details of KYC, you may be thinking of how to update KYC in SBI
for a joint account online without going to the bank. KYC (Know Your
Customer) is a vital banking procedure that helps maintain accurate and updated
customer identities and account information. SBI might ask customers to provide
updated information on their KYC if there is a need to replace the existing
information or when SBI requests for further verification.
When more than one person is linked to the same account, the
process may need to be a bit more involved, as it is with joint account
holders. Individual account holders may need to be dealt with separately
regarding their KYC details and documents, based on the account records and the
type of the KYC update needed. Hence, it is important to not consider the
update of the information of one account holder as the complete KYC for all the
people associated with the joint account.
SBI offers digital banking services to enable eligible
customers to submit or update some KYC data via available online channels.
While online KYC is possible with the majority of joint accounts and customers,
some are not automatically eligible. The ability to complete the KYC change
digitally may be impacted by the eligibility criteria, the nature of the
change, customer records already in place, account status and the verification
needed by SBI.
In this tutorial, we will see how to update KYC accounts
in SBI for joint account online and what are the steps required to do the
same, which documents will be required, and what will be the process if you
don't find any such option for your joint account in SBI online. We will also
clarify the situations where visiting an SBI branch might be required so that
you can update your KYC correctly without assuming that you can complete the
entire KYC process online at all times.
Can You Update KYC in an SBI Joint Account Online?
Yes, KYC Upation in an SBI joint account may be possible
online, but only if the applicant/remainder of the joint account holder is
eligible and the bank provides the facility for updating the KYC. It is not
possible to imagine that all the joint account holders can perform the entire
KYC process online. SBI may only be offered if the customer and account are
subject to the applicable requirements.
you are dealing with a joint account
it is especially
crucial to verify the KYC status of each account holder. It is important to
remember that even if one KYC is updated, the KYC may not need to be done again
for all of the joint holders.
Online KYC Updation can be done on the below mentioned
conditions:
The customer can update his/her KYC online:The
digital KYC facility is for the benefit of eligible customers. The use of the
online option can vary based on customer profile, customer records and the
nature of the KYC update.
There is KYC/ CKYCR information required:The bank may
already have the required KYC information in its records or it can access the
Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR). SBI may need further action if required
information is missing/outdated/needs further verification.
Your KYC documents are current with the requirements: The
identity and address documents provided for KYC should meet the requirements.
In cases where your information has changed (e.g., address, other personal
information), additional documentation or verification may be needed.
In YONO or Internet Banking there is an option called KYC:
For eligible customers, the digital banking services offered by SBI may show an
option to update the customer's KYC. Hence, log in to the concerned SBI digital
channel and see if the facility of an updated KYC is available for your
account.
The KYC updation facility is also mentioned in SBI's
official instructions as eligible customers and not for all customers. If the
option isn't available for your joint account, then don't assume that there's a
problem with your account. Depending on your case, the bank might ask you to
carry out the process via another channel such as a branch of SBI.
When You May Need to Visit an SBI Branch
An SBI branch might be needed in the following cases:
While customers can update their KYC online with SBI, they
might need to go to one of their branches for certain situations. This is
particularly relevant for persons who hold joint accounts, as the bank may have
to confirm the information for each of the individuals separately.
If you have any of the following situations you may need to
go to your SBI branch:
The online KYC option is not available: In case you don’t
find any facility to perform KYC updation while logging in to SBI YONO or
Internet Banking, your account or customer profile may not be eligible for the
specific online service. If there are significant changes in your KYC details:
If there are any significant changes in personal details, the bank might need
to see more documentation or verification before updating the records.
Additional verification may be needed if the information on
your document(s) differs from what SBI has on file. In these situations, a bank
can verify the information correctly during a visit to the branch. The KYC
requirement for joint holders may not have been fulfilled by updating one of
the KYC-required persons. SBI may ask the concerned joint holder to provide or
verify their own information.
If a digital KYC request is not completed or rejected, you
can visit the branch to get more information about why it failed and what it
needs. Hence, online KYC should be considered as a facility for eligibility and
not a replacement of branch verification.
What You Need Before Updating KYC in an SBI Joint Account
Before updating KYC in SBI Joint Account, ensure that you
have the following documents ready.
It is advisable to have all the necessary information and
documents handy before initiating the KYC updation process for an SBI joint
account. This can help you avoid delays, particularly, if SBI requires further
verification or if there is no online KYC facility for your account.
Here's a basic checklist to follow:
Active SBI account: Ensure the joint account is active, and
have the necessary account details available. If there is any limitation or
problem with the account, further support might be necessary.
*Purchased mobile number: Registered mobile number should be
available in your SBI customer profile. It could be needed when logging in to
bank accounts, for communication in digital banking services.
Access to SBI Internet Banking or YONO access may be
required if your account and customer profile is eligible to be updated online.
You will need to meet qualification requirements to have the KYC option
available.
Have acceptable identity and address document on hand. SBI
KYC document required for KYC of an individual is passport, voter ID, driving
licence, Aadhaar, NREGA card etc. as applicable and subject to conditions and
requirements. Ensure that your current residential address information is
correctly available and that the supporting document contains the information
you are needing for the KYC update.
* **PAN or other relevant details:** Ensure that your PAN or
other relevant information pertaining to your account and/or the need for KYC
is available wherever applicable. Joint account holder's KYC information: In
case of a joint account, all the information and documents pertaining to the
concerned joint holder(s) should also be kept available. The completion of one
holder's KYC should not be assumed to be the completion of all joint holders'
KYC.
Before sending anything online double check the details and
documents with the information in your existing SBI records, and ensure that
the details are accurate and up to date. For physical verification, if required
by SBI, please bring the necessary original documents to a branch.
Documents Required for SBI Joint Account KYC Update
The following documents will be required for SBI Joint
Account KYC Update.
Depending on the type of the KYC update, existing KYC
records and verification requirements for the account, you might be required to
give identity and address proof when updating KYC for an SBI joint account. Not
all of the items listed below are required for all customers. How much
documentation is required can depend on the type of information to be updated
and the applicable KYC process to be followed by SBI.
In case of joint account, the joint holder may also be
required to submit or confirm his/her KYC details. Hence, it is helpful to have
the relevant documents of the account holder whose KYC must be updated readily
available.
Identity and Address Proof
SBI's KYC documents for Individual Customers may contain the
following documents which may be accepted as ID and address proof, depending on
the requirements. Examples include:
Aadhaar can be used as a KYC document provided its use is in
accordance to the relevant requirements. Ensure the data you give is correct
and consistent with your data.
Passport: Valid passport can be accepted as an officially
accepted document for KYC as per the condition of SBI.
When it meets the requirements, voter ID can also be used as
a KYC document.
Another commonly accepted document for KYC verification, if
applicable, is a valid driving licence.
An NREGA Job Card issued by the appropriate authority is
also one of the documents that can be accepted for individual KYC subject to
the applicable conditions.
SBI may accept other officially valid documents, as
prescribed by SBI's KYC requirements, depending on the customer's circumstances
and type of KYC update.
When submitting any document, ensure that it has the correct
and up to date information, such as your name and address. If the document does
not contain information that requires to be updated then SBI may request
further documentation or verification.
For a joint account, it is not assumed that one document
submitted by one account holder will automatically update the KYC of all the
joint holders. The KYC status of each holder might need to be evaluated on a
case-by-case basis.
PAN and Other Details
While updating KYC for an SBI Account, PAN and other
personal information may be asked for but is subject to the applicable banking
and tax laws and KYC requirement and type of update requested. You should not
take it for granted that PAN is required when you get all the KYC updation
requests in the same manner.
In case SBI requests for PAN or similar data, give them the
same data as it is available in your valid documents. Please verify your name,
date of birth, PAN, address, mobile number and other information before
applying for the same. A minor discrepancy between the information they provide
and the information that is already in the bank's records could lead to further
verification or to non-digital processing.
Requirements may also vary based on the type of KYC update
and SBI's ongoing KYC process. It is, therefore, recommended to verify the
current requirements as mentioned by SBI itself via its official banking
channels before making a KYC request. When in doubt about any document or
detail, don't send anything that is not necessary to complete the process.
Most importantly, do not type someone else's PAN/ personal
details instead of one's own. If the account has been shared, the information
which is to be updated or verified should be that of the account holder whose
KYC it is being updated or verified with.
Each account holder must sign the document
A joint SBI account is a joint account to which multiple
customers are registered, but not all of them will have their personal KYC
automatically updated when one of them updates his/her KYC.
Customer Information and KYC records are unique to each
account holder. It is therefore safer to verify the KYC status of each joint
holder individually, and not presume that the joint account is completely KYC
compliant once one of the joint holders' KYC is done.
Let's say, for instance, there are two people on a joint SBI
account. This should not be interpreted as an acceptance of the second holder's
KYC information having been updated if the first holder updates their address
or identity information. The second holder's current KYC status and information
might be required to be re-checked.
SBI may ask for specific personal details, proof of identity
or address, proof of PAN etc. or may require another verification from the
concerned joint holder depending on the situation. Specific requirement may
vary depending on the customer's records and type of KYC update.
So first, determine which KYC of the joint holder needs to
be updated and have relevant details and documents ready just in case. If
multiple holders are required to update their KYC, verify the KYC requirements
for each of them, not assuming that they share a single KYC profile.
This is especially relevant with the digital channels of SBI
as the available KYC option could be customer-specific. However if the SBI
on-line facility is not available to the joint holder or a further verification
is required, SBI may ask the customer to undertake the process by other means
including at a SBI branch.
How to Update KYC in SBI for Joint Account Online Through YONO
To update KYC in SBI for Joint Account Online through YONO,
follow the steps given below.
You can check whether the SBI joint account and your
customer profile is eligible for online updation of KYC using the SBI YONO app.
The KYC updation path is mentioned in the official instructions in the section
Service Request in SBI. The option might not be available for all customers,
however, if it is available in your YONO account, follow the steps below.
Open and log in to YONO SBI
Enter the official YONO SBI app and log in with the
available YONO credentials like MPIN or User ID and password. Ensure you have
the real application of SBI and your registered mobile number is available for
authentication.
you click on Service Request
Once you log in, from the top left of the YONO home screen
click the hamburger menu. SBI's official instructions are that the KYC updation
facility can only be accessed from **Service Request**.
search for the KYC/Re-KYC option
In the Service Request, check for the respective **KYC
updation/Re-KYC** option. Note that only those customers who have a KYC
updation due and fulfil the applicable conditions can avail this menu as
mentioned by SBI. So, if you don't see the option, it doesn't mean it's a
technical issue.
Review current KYC
If the option is available, carefully review the information
displayed by SBI. This can include:
* Your existing address
* Occupation details
* Any special situations which could affect the student's
performance, if relevant
* KYC address details
* Other information displayed in the request
SBI's documented YONO instructions clearly call out to check
if address details have been populated and update details of occupation,
income, and KYC address as needed.
Updated required information
If any information is displayed which requires updating,
only enter your current, genuine and accurate information. Avoid changing
information just to meet the request. If the information is correct, go through
it to ensure that nothing is changed where it doesn't need to be changed.
If you're an account holder on a joint account, keep in mind
that KYC is associated with individual customer records. As such, each joint
holder should be subject to a separate KYC check.
Click on "Accept the Declaration"
Review information and then read the declaration or
undertaking on screen carefully. If the information is accurate and you agree
with the declaration, tap on the relevant check-box and then move on, by
clicking on the Next button or the appropriate relevant button in the app. The
undertaking step is included as part of SBI's official instructions.
Complete the Required Authentication
YONO will prompt you for authentication, follow its
procedure. SBI might need to perform more verification before accepting the KYC
request. From the official SBI app, fill all the authentication that is
required and never share your OTP, MPIN, password or any banking details.
click Submit and Check Confirmation
Finally, you need to click on the KYC updation request
button while waiting for SBI to confirm the change as shown. Save confirmation
or status message for future reference.
Do not presume that the KYC is updated if the KYC option is
not available, if the digital process is not for your joint account or not
relevant for your joint account. If that is the case, consult the instructions
on the SBI or visit a branch to find out what to do next. The online facility
is a service that is offered to a student who meets the criteria, and not to
all joint accounts.
How to Update SBI Joint Account KYC Through Internet Banking
The steps to update SBI Joint Account KYC via Internet
banking are discussed below:
If you have an SBI Joint Account and you are allowed to do
Internet Banking Online KYC updation, you can find out whether the relevant KYC
option is available in your SBI Online Banking account or not. SBI Internet
Banking KYC instructions outline a process including navigating to My Accounts
& Profile, selecting an account, checking the account information
displayed, updating account information as required, making a declaration and
then verifying with the account.
The facility, however, may be subject to the customer
profile, account status and the type of KYC update needed. So these steps
should be considered as a guideline for the process available in SBI Internet
Banking and not as a guarantee to get KYC done 100% online for all joint
accounts.
You have to first log in to SBI Internet banking
Visit the official website of SBI Internet Banking and log
in with Internet Banking ID and password. Be sure you are using the official
SBI site and do not provide your credentials in emails/messages or on untrusted
sites.
click on My Accounts & Profile
Once you successfully log-in you may see the following link
in the Internet Banking menu: My Accounts & Profile. It is a zone that
offers various services related to account and profiles offered by SBI.
Select Update KYC
In the profile / service details, search for **Update KYC**.
If it is possible for your customer profile, then click on it to proceed with
the KYC updation process.
Do not think that there is a technical problem with your
account if they don't have this option. Not all customers and not all account
types may have an online KYC facility.
Select the relevant account from the list of accounts
If SBI shows more than one account that qualifies, choose
the account that you want to verify or update your KYC. If you are using a
joint account, be extra careful of the account information displayed prior to
signing up. Keep in mind that the joint account does not indicate that all
those holding the account have the same one KYC record. The KYC status of the
relevant joint holder should be taken into account separately.
Once you have finished entering the information, verify the
details you entered are accurate.
Please carefully examine what information is already in the
system before making changes. Review information like your address and other
customer details on the KYC process page.
Don't make unnecessary changes if the information is
accurate. Do not update if it's no longer accurate or it has been
misrepresented; only update if there is accurate information and supporting
details.
Update Income/Required Information
In case SBI requests you to share or update your
income-related details or other KYC details, provide them with your current and
genuine details. Please do not enter an approximation or incorrect number to
fill in an online form. The information that is requested may vary based on the
KYC requirements and profile of the customer. Do not presume that all customers
will see the same fields; follow the fields as shown in SBI.
Sign and submit the Declaration
After reviewing your information, carefully read the
declaration displayed on the screen. Verify that the information you have given
is correct and complete and accept the applicable declaration and go on.
If you see any wrong name, address, PAN, income detail or
any other important information then do not submit the request. If possible,
correct the information first in the system.
finish with High-Security Password/Authentication
Before submitting the KYC request, SBI might ask you to go
through an authentication process. Please use **profile password or other
suitable security verification** to log in using the official Internet Banking
login screen. Never provide your Internet Banking password, OTP, PIN,
authentication code or other information to anyone, not even a call from SBI.
check the KYC update confirmation
Once authenticated as per requirement submit the request and
watch the confirmation/ status message appearing in SBI. If a reference number
or confirmation information is given, keep it for your records.
The KYC update isn't done once you've filled out the form.
Verify the status/confirmation given by SBI.
Keep in mind that when updating KYC information for a joint
account this should not be assumed to be a joint holders KYC update. When the
KYC is to be done for another holder, whose KYC was due or requires
verification separately, their KYC status should be verified separately.
If Update KYC is not available, the account cannot be
selected, the request is unsuccessful, or SBI requires further verification,
the online process might not be suitable for you in this instance. If in that
case, follow the instructions given by SBI or call bank/visit an SBI branch to
find out what further action/documentation is required.
How Does KYC Work for SBI Joint Account Holders?
The KYC for a SBI joint account may be a little different
from what customers think, as a joint account pertains to the multiple
customers and KYC primarily focuses on the identity and information of the
individual customer. That is, it is not a requirement that all the account
holders have a single record of personal KYC.
If two or more persons open a joint account in SBI, each
person will be registered as an individual account holder. Their KYC details
including identity and address are recorded by their bank, along with any
applicable information. The KYC status of the related account holders may be
crucial in case of KYC updation or re-verification request from the bank.
Each individual holder will find the KYC relevant
Let's say that there are two people who hold an SBI Joint
Account. It is important to not assume that if the first holder is KYC'd, the
second holder is necessarily KYC'd. The successful updation of the KYC by the
first person does not ensure the current KYC status of another person
associated with the same account.
Therefore, individuals who are joint account holders should
ensure that KYC status for each one is checked separately by the account
holder, especially when SBI has explicitly asked for KYC updation/re-KYC.
For instance, if Holder A KYC is up to date, but Holder B
KYC is due for update, the former's KYC may not meet the latter's requirements.
The second holder will still be required to supply the relevant information,
update the documents or go through another verification process, depending on
SBI's applicable process.
Each holder's KYC status is important for the reasons listed
below:
KYC is intended to enable a bank to keep up with accurate
information about customers and performing the customer verification required.
They may have different particular information, papers, addresses, and KYC
histories, which means that the records might need to be updated at different
times.
Hence, in case you're looking to update KYC in an SBI joint
account online, ensure that you first determine which holder's KYC requires
attention. Please verify available KYC status of the relevant customer and
proceed as directed in the window provided in the authorized digital banking
channel of the bank.
Also, do not take it for granted that all the documents or
online option will be available for all of the joint holders. Requirements for
eligibility and verification may change based on the customer's files and the
type of change requested.
But what if there is no Online KYC?
The digital route may not apply in this instance if the KYC
option is not available via YONO or Internet Banking for the concerned Joint
Holder. Likewise, if the online request is rejected, further verification is
needed or if SBI requires physical documents they are not to be submitted
repeatedly without understanding the reasons.
In such cases, the SBI branch route may be the better
alternative. The joint holder can be requested to submit the necessary
documents for verification or finish KYC procedure as directed by the bank.
The best way is then to consider KYC a requirement of the
customer in a joint account. Ensure KYC status for each joint holder has been
verified independently, ensure accurate and up-to-date information and only
utilize SBI's digital facility when available and applicable to that specific
customer.
What If SBI KYC Update Option Is Not Showing Online?
If you cannot find the SBI KYC Update Option online, what
will you do?
The absence of SBI KYC update option online does not
necessarily imply that your YONO app or Internet Banking is malfunctioning.
Availability of KYC may be subject to your customer eligibility, KYC status,
account records and the type of verification needed. This becomes relevant when
the account is held jointly as each joint holder's KYC may have to be taken
into account individually.
We have not found any KYC Update Option in YONO
There may be several reasons why you don't have a KYC or
Re-KYC option in YONO:
If the KYC is not due to be updated, then the update will
not be displayed by SBI.
You are not eligible for updating online: The online
facility may be available to customers who fulfil applicable SBI criteria.
* **The bank does not have the necessary information in its
records:** If the bank requires further information and/or verification that
cannot be done online, the online option may not be available.
Whereas, for some customer/accounts scenarios, document
verification or other verification process can be required at a branch level
and YONO cannot complete this.
So, don't assume you have to reinstall the app or log in
repeatedly the missing option is.
KYC option is not visible on Internet Banking page
The same may happen when you visit SBI Internet banking. In
case you do not see the option of Update KYC under the concerned profile/
account services, you might have one of the following options: Your KYC is not
due or your customer profile is not eligible for the online facility, or there
is lack of information in SBI's records, or further verification is required.
In the first place, ensure that you are checking the right
profile for Internet Banking and be careful in reviewing the options. If it is
not available, proceed with the instructions SBI currently has for it, instead
of sending other information just for the sake of it being a KYC update.
The Joint Account Holder is unable to update his/her KYC online
If it is a joint account, check the individual KYC status of
the respective joint holder, rather than relying on the assumption the other
joint holder's KYC was updated so the requirement is met.
For instance, one KYC holder may have already completed
their KYC, while another holder's KYC is still pending, so the latter might
still need to undertake the relevant procedure. It is also possible that the
digital KYC facility may not be available for one holder when it is available
for another holder.
In such a case where the concerned joint holder is not able
to visit an SBI branch or is unable to access the online KYC facility through
YONO or Internet Banking or where SBI needs further verification then visiting
an SBI branch could be a practical step. Bring relevant KYC documents, account
information and request the bank to verify and/or update information. Most
importantly, don't suppose that KYC has been updated just because you don't see
an online option. Please review and adhere to the channel SBI has provided for
your specific customer type.
How to Update KYC in SBI Joint Account Offline
KYC SBI Joint Account Offline is a critical process in the
banking industry. However, if you are unable to update KYC for your SBI
joint account via YONO or Internet banking, it's not the end of the world. In
the absence of digital KYC/Re-KYC updation, or for additional verification, an
SBI branch can offer an offline KYC updation process.
If the account is a joint account, it is important to ensure
that the KYC needs to be updated for which account holder. If the KYC is
pending for more than one holder, inquire from the branch if each holder should
update their KYC.
Go to SBI Branch
Go to any SBI branch and inform them that you need to update
or re-verify KYC for your joint account. When requesting access to a branch, go
to the branch where the account is held, especially if the request involves
accessing account-specific records or additional verification. It is helpful to
review SBI's latest KYC requirements and forms before you visit to get an idea
of what information you might need.
Always take KYC documents while travelling
Provide necessary KYC documents of the joint holder for
whose information is to be updated. This will include proof of identity, proof
of address and the customer information as requested by SBI as per requirement.
The original documents and copies (where applicable) are recommended to be
carried as it may be required that the original documents be checked by the
branch before accepting the update. Ensure that your account information and
PAN details are kept handy wherever applicable. If the other joint holder's KYC
is also to be updated, inquire if they require their own documentation or if
they have to go through their own KYC updation process.
Request for KYC/Re-KYC updation
In the branch go to the bank representative and request to
do KYC or Re-KYC updation for the concerned joint account holder. SBI has KYC
related forms and documents for customer KYC updation, such as KYC related
forms and documents (in relation to individual KYC updation) and applicable
with respect to digital/YONO related processes. The branch staff can verify for
you which form or process you are required to follow, and if any other
verification is required.
Provide all information as required/submit the require documents
Complete the information requested carefully and only give
accurate and up to date information. Before signing the form, please read your
name, address, PAN and other relevant details. In the case of joint accounts,
ensure that the information is for the proper account holder. Please do not
fill out a KYC form for another individual's joint holder. The bank may check
the attached documents and information prior to making the record change.
Attach any other documents or clarifications as prescribed by the branch if
necessary.
Keep the Acknowledgement/Confirmation
Once the KYC request is made, request an acknowledgment,
receipt or otherwise confirming that it has been made. Save it for further
safety until you're sure that the KYC updation is done in SBI's records. If the
branch informs you that the updation will take some time, then you have to wait
for the time specified by the branch and check the status of the updation
through the appropriate SBI channel. If the KYC is not resolved make a follow
up call to the branch with your acknowledgement or reference number. This
offline KYC is helpful when there is no online KYC option, when online KYC
request fails and SBI needs to verify any physical document for the account
holder of the joint account.
Can Both Joint Account Holders Update KYC at the Same Time?
Yes, both the account holders may be able to do their KYC
updation at the same time, depending on the account, customer circumstances,
KYC status of the Account Holders and the facility offered in SBI's digital or
physical branch.
A joint account is made up of a number of account holders
and KYC is linked to the individual customer's details and verification. Hence,
if both of the holders have KYC requirement, it is essential to verify the KYC
status of each individual separately.
Review and verify the KYC status of both holders separately
Let's say that there are two people who hold an SBI joint
account, and the names are Holder A and Holder B. It is not recommended to
assume that Holder A's KYC will be automatically updated when Holder B's KYC is
to be updated.
Rather, determine if KYC is required for each of the
holders. One person might have current KYC information, and another person may
have KYC that is due or needs further verification. Facility also may vary by
internet availability for the specific customer profile.
When SBI offers the relevant KYC option to both the eligible
customers, every customer can follow the relevant digital KYC process and input
his/her accurate information. The options they're offered and the verification
they'll need may not be the same, however, because both people are connected
with the identical account.
What if both of them are not available in digital?
Do not presume that the KYC requirement has been satisfied
when the KYC facility is not available for one or both joint holders for **YONO
or Internet Banking**.Please check the status of concerned holder and follow
the alternative process as provided by SBI. In case, if the digital facility is
unavailable or further authentication of documents is needed, then the
practical approach is to go to an SBI branch. The KYC information and relevant
documents might need to be submitted by the concerned holder as directed by the
bank.
It is important to be aware that KYC is not the same as the Account Operation Mandate
The other key thing to understand is that KYC updation and
the operating mandate of the joint account are two distinct concepts. The
operating mandate dictates the manner in which the joint account can be
operated, such as allowing a single author to operate the account on his own or
by joint authorization as specified in the terms of the joint account. On the
other hand, KYC relates to the identification and verification of the
individual customer.
Thus, the KYC updation of both the holders does not
automatically reflect in the operation of the joint account. Likewise, a joint
account may be operated in accordance with a specific mandate, but the one
holder's KYC is not necessarily the same as the other holder's KYC requirement.
It is advisable to undertake KYK each holder of the joint separately, after
each person's KYK and use the branch route if a digital KYK is not available or
additional verification is needed for SBI.
Does Updating KYC Change the SBI Joint Account?
Yes, updating KYC could affect the SBI Joint Account. No,
updating KYC does not generally imply that the ownership of or the operating
instructions to an SBI joint account have been modified. There are two banking
issues that can be distinguished from KYC updation, which is how a joint
account is managed.
The main goal of KYC updation is to ensure that the bank
maintains the customer's identity and other relevant details up-to-date and
accurate. Upon KYC update, it may be necessary to reaffirm or update certain
details including your address, occupation, income details (if applicable),
your applicable KYC, or other customer information. This does not necessarily
mean that the ownership of the joint account will change or how the account
will be operated.
The KYC Update and Joint Account Operation are two different things
A joint account may be held by more than one person and its
operation could have special instructions or a mandate with the bank. For
instance, the account may be available for operation by only one of the
holders, or by more than one holder.
The operating instructions are a component of the KYC process
Hence, a change in KYC details of one of the joint holders
is not to be considered a mandate to change the account's operating mandate.
Likewise, if you update the KYC information for all joint holders, this does
not alter the fact that the account is held by more than one person and what it
is used for.
So what does an update to KYC really entail?
The main focus of a KYC update is keeping customers'
information accurate. The KYC process allows the bank to update the records of
the customer, if any information such as the address has changed and is
required to be updated.
In case of a joint account, the KYC of the individual
account holders can be treated separately. This can result in one holder
needing to make changes to their personal details, yet another being able to
make the required changes. What's important is that KYC updation should not be
taken to mean adding, removing or changing account holders.
Does KYC impact the way the account can be operated?
Not just because KYC has been updated. The way of operation
of a joint account is as per the instructions and mandate on the account held
by SBI. The only way to change the manner of operation of the account is to
make a request, which may involve following the bank's approved process and
need to be authorised by the relevant account holders. For instance, when
performing KYC an individual may update his/her address of the joint holder and
thus the operating instruction of the account may change from “jointly
operated” to “either or survivor” and vice versa.
So, while updating KYC, be sure to include the customer's
up-to-date and accurate information. If you also want to update the name of the
account holder, joint holders or the operating mandate, please inquire from SBI
about the process for that change, instead of assuming that the KYC update will
automatically carry out that change.
What Happens If SBI Joint Account KYC Is Not Updated?
If you are having a joint account with SBI, and KYC updation
is pending, then it is advisable not to delay it. SBI's depositor policy
considers the KYC non-compliance scenario of “Overdue KYC updation” as one of
the circumstances. But this does NOT means that all accounts will be instantly
frozen just because KYC has not been updated by some certain date. The impact
may vary based on the customer's situation, the standing of the KYC
requirement, the existing banking regulations and what needs to be done by SBI.
KYC Notice is not to be ignored
In case you receive a notification from SBI saying
KYC/ReKYC, consider it as a critical banking message. First, find out if the
notice refers to you or another co-holder, or if it is about the account's KYC
in general.
If it's a joint account, keep in mind that the KYC status of
the individual may need to be taken into account separately. The KYC
verification of one holder does not necessarily imply that another holder has
also fulfilled their KYC.
Restrictions or limitations may apply
In cases where KYC is still outstanding or does not meet the
requirements, the restrictions or limitations may apply depending on the
situation and requirements. The effect might not be the same for each customer
and it's not suitable to say that you'll have to restrict each customer right
away. Therefore, the earlier the answer you can give an SBI KYC request, the
better it will be as compared to the time you face an issue while using the
account.
The KYC Non-Compliance may impact the Account
This may impact the account and/or the relevant customer's
banking services if the KYC information has not been updated as required for
compliance. The impact may vary depending on the type of KYC problem and the
actions needed by the customer. Hence, if you get a "KYC Upcoming"
message, review the KYC update options and update KYC by an authorized SBI
channel, as long as you are eligible.
What if there's no way to do Online KYC?
In case the KYC option is not present in the YONO or
Internet Banking, do not ignore the notification. The online facility might not
be available for your customer profile or SBI may need more information or
verification. If that is the case, then contact SBI or go to a branch for
clarification. Bring the necessary KYC documents and detail of the relevant
joint holder and inquire from the bank regarding the exact requirement.
The best way to deal with a KYC notice is to respond in a
timely manner, confirm the status of each of the relevant joint holders and
follow the channel SBI offers. This eliminates unnecessary postponement and
will save you unsupported speculations as well.

SBI Joint Account KYC: Online vs Branch
For an SBI joint account, both online and branch-based KYC
updation can be useful, but the better option depends on your eligibility and
the nature of the update. Online KYC can be more convenient when the required
facility is available and the request is straightforward. A branch may be more
practical when additional verification or document checking is required.

Which Option Should You Choose?
Choose the online route when SBI provides the KYC
option for the concerned joint holder and your information can be updated
without additional verification.
A branch visit is more appropriate if the online
option is missing, the request fails or is rejected, important details need
verification, or the KYC requirement involves circumstances that cannot be
completed digitally.
For joint accounts, check each holder's KYC status
separately regardless of which method you choose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I update SBI joint account KYC online?
Yes, SBI joint account KYC may be updated online when the
concerned customer is eligible and the applicable KYC facility is available
through SBI's digital channels. However, online updation is not guaranteed for
every joint account or every holder. If additional verification is required,
SBI may direct you to a branch.
Can SBI joint account KYC be updated through YONO?
Yes, eligible customers may be able to update KYC through
YONO SBI. You can check the relevant KYC or Re-KYC option under the available
Service Request section. If the option is not displayed, your customer profile
or KYC requirement may not qualify for that digital facility.
Can I update SBI KYC through Internet Banking?
Yes, eligible customers may be able to use SBI Internet
Banking for KYC updation. The applicable option can generally be checked
through the relevant My Accounts & Profile → Update KYC section. The
availability of the facility depends on the customer and account circumstances.
Do both joint account holders need to update KYC?
Not necessarily at the same time or in every situation. The
KYC status of each joint holder should be checked separately. One holder's KYC
may be current while another holder's KYC may be due for updation.
Can one joint account holder update KYC for another holder?
You should not assume that one holder's KYC updation
automatically updates another holder's KYC. KYC is linked to individual
customer information. The concerned joint holder may need to provide their own
information or complete the applicable verification.
What documents are required for SBI KYC update?
The documents required depend on the KYC process and the
information being updated. SBI's accepted individual KYC documents can include
Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, driving licence, NREGA Job Card, and other
applicable officially valid documents. Not every document is necessarily
required for every customer.
What if SBI KYC update option is not showing?
The option may not appear if your KYC is not currently due,
you are not eligible for online updation, required information is unavailable
in SBI's records, or additional verification is required. If the option remains
unavailable, contact SBI or visit a branch for clarification.
Can I update SBI KYC without visiting a branch?
Possibly, if you are eligible for SBI's digital KYC facility
and the required option is available through YONO or Internet Banking. However,
some cases may require physical verification or additional documentation,
making a branch visit necessary.
What should I do if my online KYC request fails?
First, check whether SBI has provided a reason for the
failure or requested additional information. Verify that your submitted details
are accurate and current. If the request continues to fail or requires
verification, contact SBI or visit a branch instead of repeatedly submitting
the same request.
Is SBI KYC update free?
KYC updation itself should not be treated as a service for
which you need to pay an unknown person or third party. Use only SBI's official
digital channels or branch services and check SBI's current terms for any
specific service-related charges that may apply to your particular request.
Never pay anyone to provide or “activate” an online KYC facility.
Final Thoughts
The first thing to note about how to update KYC in SBI
for joint account online is that it is not a universal facility for all
joint accounts with SBI. The process can be done digitally if you are eligible,
KYC status, customer record, nature of information that needs to be updated and
applicable option in SBI profile.
The first step would be to find out if there is a KYC or
Re-KYC option in SBI's authorized digital banking channels. YONO SBI and SBI
Internet Banking can be beneficial ways to verify and complete an appropriate
KYC updation request for eligible customers.
If your account is a joint account, however, don't view KYC
just on the account level. An update to an individual holder's KYC should not
be interpreted as an update to another holder's KYC. If another joint holder's
KYC is due, verify the status of that person's KYC and proceed with relevant
process.
Additional documents or verification may be necessary if
your address and/or other KYC details have changed significantly. Likewise, if
there is no online KYC or it fails or it is necessary for SBI to see the
documents in person, a branch visit could be a next step.
Finally, while understanding the steps of updating KYC in
SBI for a joint account online, keep in mind only those who are eligible for
the same can do it. Ensure that all information is accurate and up-to-date,
documents are authentic and only KYC information is done through official SBI
channels. Avoid giving out OTPs, passwords, pin numbers or any other
confidential banking information to anyone requesting to complete KYC.
